Merlot

C & M Watermelon Imports Ltd is pleased to announce that it’s now importing Merlot grapes from Italy. This dark blue grape was first grown in France in the late 18th century, but it soon spread to other parts of the world, including Italy.

The Merlot is principally grown in northern regions of the country, including Tuscany and Triveneto, but in recent years it has become more common in vineyards further south. It is now the fifth most widely planted grape in Italy; it’s an early-maturing grape variety which can ripen fully even in slightly cooler climates. At C & M Watermelon Imports we import our Merlot grapes from Puglia, in the south-eastern corner of Italy, and it’s available throughout the season.

Distinctive Aromas

While it can be used for rosés and white sparkling wines, most Merlot grapes produce light reds. These are characterised by their distinctive aromas, which are usually fruity but with hints of herb. The fruity textures can include plums, blackberries, blackcurrants and blueberries.

Merlot grapes are also often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and other grape varietals (including the Sangiovese) as they serve to soften their high levels of acidity. Most Merlots can also be described as smooth, soft, and easy to drink; its soft textures and low tannin levels mean it’s extremely easy on the palate.

Italian Merlot Grapes

Because it’s such a light wine, Merlot wine goes well with starters (such as cured meats), main courses (particularly those containing chicken, other lighter meats and roasted vegetables) and many cheeses.

We can deliver Italian Merlot grapes to all parts of the UK, including London, Birmingham, Manchester and Cardiff. If you would like to know more either follow this link or call us on 0208 345 5555.
